Kindle gets 85% wireless battery boost & PDF reader update | SlashGear

Amazon have announced a new firmware update for their Kindle ebook reader that can apparently boost battery life by up to 85-percent. With wireless connectivity turned on, the Kindle now runs for up to seven days rather than the previous four-day battery life; however the non-wireless runtimes are unchanged, suggesting the firmware applies to the Kindle’s modem. The software also adds a native PDF reader to the ebook device.

Amazon Kindle for PC launches - SlashGear

We first caught wind of the Amazon Kindle for PC application back in October when it was announced with a vague launch date of November. Amazon announced yesterday that the Kindle for PC application is now available for download. The app turns your notebook or desktop into an eReader to access the Amazon digital book site.

Kindle for PC 1 540x420

You can download the free application from Amazon now and books are usually $9.99 or less. In case you missed the first post about the application last month, I will run down the details for you. You can use the app to purchase books from the Kindle Store. Users can read the beginning of any book before they purchase.

The app also lets users access the books they previously purchased on their computer. Ten different font sizes are supported and the number of words per line can be adjusted. When you stop, your page is automatically bookmarked for you. Windows 7 users with a touch compatible computer can also zoom in and out with pinch gestures and turn pages with a finger swipe.

Amazon stops selling Sprint-powered Kindle | CNET

Just weeks after announcing a new $279 international version of its Kindle e-book reader, Amazon has chopped $20 off its price and made that model its only Kindle offering for both the domestic U.S. and international markets. In the process, the company has eliminated the U.S. version of the device, which used Sprint as the carrier for the Kindle's built-in wireless capabilities. Now, for better or worse, new Kindles will tap into AT&T's data network, which will also be the wireless provider behind Barnes & Noble's upcoming Nook e-book reader.

Astak's $199 EZ Reader Pocket PRO wants to give Kindle 'a run for its money' | engadget

"Last we heard from Astak, it was quietly peddling some off-the-wall Mentor e-book reader based on a drab OEM model that every other no-name reader manufacturer uses. Now, however, it seems the company has a bit more pep in its step (though it's still copying others, this time the BeBook), as it has proudly proclaimed that the new 5-inch EZ Reader Pocket PRO is primed to "give Amazon's Kindle a run for its money." With Adobe's blessing, the device is able to support over 20 open file formats along with DRM-laced PDF files; also of note, a sure-to-be-controversial text-to-speech feature can read back documents aloud. The six-ounce device will be available in a half dozen hues, and within you'll find a 400MHz processor, 512MB of memory, an SD expansion slot, 8-level grayscale E-ink screen, a replaceable battery good for 8,000 page turns per charge and an MP3 player that can operate in the background. Sadly, no wireless connectivity is baked in, but the $199 price point is definitely tantalizing. Anyone looking to get in on a pre-order before it ships later this month?" ... more details at link
